Innovative Educators of Scholarship Prep in Orange and San Diego Counties to Bring Proven-Successful Model to L.A. County

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (November 29, 2018) – In a meeting late yesterday, the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) Board of Education approved a new countywide independent public charter school to open in Lomita/Harbor City in August 2019. The new school will serve students in Transitional Kindergarten (TK) through eighth grades, will be free to attend, and will be operated by the innovative educators of Scholarship Prep, who currently operate two charter schools in Santa Ana and Oceanside, California. The school will be located at 25425 S. Western Avenue in Lomita, California, currently the site of Harbor Church.

Scholarship Prep — led by former California Senator Gloria Romero and long-time educator and charter school operator Jason Watts — is a comprehensive public charter school model that represents a breakthrough approach to education which has proven particularly successful in closing the gap for foster youth and socioeconomically disadvantaged students in the areas it serves. In fact, in the less than two years since its campuses opened in Santa Ana and Oceanside, state achievement tests in math and English Language Arts/Literacy reveal that Scholarship Prep’s students have shattered all expectations when it comes to performance on these tests. As of this year, Scholarship Prep’s Santa Ana campus is ranked #1 in the state for math growth on the 2018 CAASPP (California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress) and ranks in the top one percent of all California schools in academic growth in English Language Arts/Literacy.

“With this vote, Scholarship Prep is thrilled to establish a new school that will serve the students of Lomita/Harbor City, beginning in the 2019-2020 school year,” said Scholarship Prep Co-Founder and CEO Gloria Romero. “We are grateful to the LAUSD Board of Education for recognizing and affirming our commitment to closing academic achievement gaps and accelerating learning so that every student can find their individual pathway to college and the American Dream,” she added.

The new Scholarship Prep campus will serve at-risk students in transitional kindergarten through eighth grade who reside in Lomita, Harbor City, and surrounding areas. Scholarship Prep’s instructional model is designed to serve all students effectively through a rigorous and interactive curriculum, incorporating parent education, and dedicated, individualized teacher support. Specifically, Scholarship Prep’s “scholar students” can expect a high-caliber campus environment organized around a university-inspired, college scholarship concept where students understand that by achieving academic, arts, and/or athletic excellence, a broader array of possibilities and options exist for future endeavors in higher education.

First year enrollment at the new Scholarship Prep Lomita/Harbor City campus is estimated to be 250 students or more, while the program is designed to allow expansion to 375 students if sufficient students are interested and space is available. The Scholarship Prep team will immediately begin extensive community outreach to inform area parents of the new school option.

“We have proven at Scholarship Prep that we have the capacity and ability to directly affect change through public education, and we firmly believe that education delayed is education denied,” said Scholarship Prep Co-Founder and COO, Jason Watts. “Our mission of providing a university-inspired pathway of success while closing the achievement gap for all students, including those underserved, has taken us to Santa Ana and Oceanside. We also know, through professional and personal experience, that students and families in Los Angeles have been underserved in various areas, including public education. We are committed to being a part of the solution of closing the achievement and opportunity gaps in Los Angeles, beginning with our new Lomita/Harbor City campus,” he added.

Scholarship Prep Lomita/Harbor City will be publicly funded, free to families, and open to all students who apply.
